Tank Farm

Safety & Environment

Safety is a top priority at AFSC Companies.
All staff receive on-going training to ensure that they are kept abreast of the latest developments in techniques and safety procedures.

KEY SAFETY and Environmental protection features
which have been built into the Facility include :

  • Full fire-fighting capability at the Jetty, including provision for fire-boat support .
  • Multiple hazard protection for submarine fuel pipelines linking the Jetty with AFSC Tank Farm.
  • Weatherproof accomodation for supervisory and operational staff at remote location, the Sha Chau Jetty .
  • Air eliminators in the pipeline/tankfarm fuel flow system to remove entrained air and thereby minimize explosion risk within the filters .
  • Work boat and trained personnel for deploying the oil boom in the event of an oil spill .
  • A closed-circuit sampling system to monitor and maintain the highest quality environmentally-sensitive operating practices possible .
  • Leak detection systems on the receipt pipelines and within the hydrant system (including one under the Passenger Terminal Building) .
  • A hydrant system sub-divided into modules sealed by remote-controlled high-integrity isolation valves.

The Environmental and Safety Systems installed by AFSC at Hong Kong International Airport are up to the highest international standard.

The guidelines used have been drawn up by some of the world's largest oil companies pooling their collective expertise and experience.

International oil industry experts review Hong Kong's Aviation Fuel System annually, analyze its performance standards, and make suggestions for on-going improvements.

A zero spillage policy, a standard set by the international oil industry, is adopted by AFSC Companies. This policy is vital at Hong Kong International Airport, given the immediate marine environment surrounding it. The Facility has therefore had to undergo a rigorous licensing process regarding environmental emissions of all kinds.

The waters surrounding the airport are the habitat of the Chinese White Dolphin (sousa chinensis), an endangered species. Dolphin monitoring has been undertaken by environmental consultants and the Agricultural, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
